Iconic Japanese market. We stumbled upon Maruichi during our Boston trip, and it quickly became an unforgettable highlight! We visited this spot two or three times during our two-day trip, which shows how much we relied on Maruichi -- a true staple! We sampled their variety of onigiri, which were decent. The rice-to-filling ratio was a bit off, with not much filling inside, but they made for a satisfying snack while exploring Boston. However, the real standout for me was their dango. We indulged in these chewy, mildly sweet treats while watching Netflix at our Airbnb, and they were absolute perfection. We actually visited a second time and a third time to get the dangos again! -- ironically these dangos were the one thing I missed the most about Boston. Maruichi offers a great selection of Japanese snacks, fresh foods, personal care items, and other household essentials. If you're ever in Boston, this market is a must-visit!

Maruichi is such a great supermarket to buy your favorite Japanese snacks, produce, drinks, etc. They even have a lifestyle section in the back where you can stock up on your beauty essentials, homeware and cute plushies. Everything is reasonably priced and great quality. Highly recommend the Ogawa coffee grounds for those who like to make coffee at home :) If you're feeling hungry, they also have a cafeteria across the street where you can grab a quick matcha latte and a yummy onigiri. The employees seemed very welcoming in both the cafeteria and supermarket. Looking forward to coming back soon!

I believe Maruichi is the only Japanese market in Massachusetts. I remember finding out about this place when I was trying to see if there was a Mitsuwa closer by & not have to troop to Edgewater, NJ. Great place to come for some sushi/sashimi grade fish to bring home to eat. They also have so many snacks that you wouldn't be able to find in other Asian markets, even HMart. They've got the cutest stationary items and plushies. A little pricey but is kind of expected, especially with it being located in Brookline. All of their produce is incredibly fresh. Across the street, they have their cafe, which has one of the best matchas in Boston and yummy Japanese food that is just as good as or better than most Japanese restaurants, + not as expensive. Also, they have HUGE onigiris for only $4, premade, & premade dishes that are great to pick up for on the go. There is lots of parking available in the area, including a pay by meter parking lot. I totally recommend checking Maruichi's out if you haven't!

Across the street from maruichi select is this cute extension branch food and deli on one side, and a cute Japanese plushy, pencil, pens, personal body care, shampoos and face washes etc. Grabbed a bag of chips and some pencils while here but def would return the pricing here is better than the Korean - Japanese beauty products stores in Allston / Brighton. Didn't talk to any of the staff but did get a quick checkout.

I got the cherry matcha latte with oat milk from Maruichi. The cafe seating area is super bite. It was also packed when I went around 8pm on a Thursday night. My cherry matcha latte was pretty good but not great. I was hoping it would taste a bit richer

Service 5/5 The women taking our order was so sweet I'd come back just for her. I wasn't sure about sweetness levels but she assured me I can adjust after if I'd like! Theres a lot of seating but it does get quite busy - there's a water station and it was clean overall. The matcha was the best I've had in Boston and the onigiri was also delicious. I would 10/10 recommend.

This place is amazing and I recommend it to everyone! The food was so delicious - I loved my gyudon bowl and the hand roll set was also so enjoyable. You order at the counter and then pick up the food, which came out pretty quick. My friend and I sat in the little dome structure and it felt so cozy and homey. I also love that they sell special Japanese goods you can take home! This place seems like it'd be great for a coffee/matcha date or working with friends!

In the past few years, Maruichi has continued to improve their Brookline location and has fully opened up their restaurant/cafe in the back. It even includes a traditional floor seating area which is pretty delightful. If nothing in the cold prepared area piques your interest (or if it's dinner and they've run out), then the restaurant in the back has a pretty decent selection of traditional Japanese meals including ramen, curry, gyudon, katsu, and hand rolls. It's counter service where you order on the left then the kitchen on the right calls your food out when it's ready. There's also free water/cups, utensils, and condiments at the front. You bus your table once you're done. Service has been polite/fast, even when they're swamped. I've had their katsu and curry before, both delicious and hearty, and I like the "sets" that they come with (miso soup, rice, and pickled veggies). I've even had their kids meal which was honestly a pretty decent portion if you're in the mood for a lighter meal. The one let down was their hand rolls- I've had them twice now and they're a tad expensive for what you get, but what turned me off was how over-sauced they can be. If they just dialed back the sauce a little bit and let the fish shine, it would have been perfect.

Such a great spot! Easy and convenient ordering, and a lot of great, fresh food options. I ordered the chicken katsu curry, which was very flavorful and unlike any Japanese curry I have had (in a good way!). It was light, had onions, and maybe chicken (?). Chicken had a great crunch and was super juicy. My friend ordered the chirashi which was delicious as well. Very fresh sashimi that melts in your mouth. Grand portions, will keep you full and satisfied (especially the curry in these colder months). Service was great, the workers were very kind. The ambiance was modern and clean, there is a small curated area that has food and kitchen items (great for finding unique and useful gifts!) It is a great spot to meet a friend, since it is so convenient and delicious. Made sure to grab hojicha on the way out, so good. Make sure to check out their grocery store across the street too!

The best casual Japanese restaurant in town? Definitely here. Maruichi's off shoot, GenSouEn has finally hit their stride and is taking full advantage of their back area. Furnished with a tatami room as a nod to the traditional Japanese tea rooms, the beautiful wooden furniture, the indoor tree and ambience makes this a pleasant but casual place to get some delicious food. I have long been on a hunt for great casual Japanese food that isn't just centralized on ramen or sushi, and not surprisingly, Maruichi has done it. Grab some Japanese food products, or treat yourself to high quality tea afterwards!
